Shvaprasanna feels that the art scene in Kolkata is not as progressive as it should be...
A constant evolution of cerebral thought and pertinent social consciousness permeate the works of Shuvaprasanna. Incorporating within it the existential crisis that dominates the myriad of urban life as well as the maladies that plague the intellectually downtrodden, Shuvaprasanna has always offered something new and dynamic in all his works. In his own words, his exhibition ‘Recent and Retrospective’ is a chronicle of his “journey over the years”. The artist explains further in the interview.
q. Give us an insight regarding your exhibition ‘Recent and Retrospective’?
Well this is a collection, which redefines my journey in the world of art, which commenced from around 1969. Many of my works have been displayed in various parts of the globe in a number of fame studios. Following those exhibitions, many of them were purchased as collections by a number of art lovers. Yet I managed to keep some paintings from each of those outings and have made up quite a vast collection. This is a showcase of those along with some of my more recent endeavours, which will show my works in a renewed perspective.
q. What were the new things in this selection?
Of course, it featured some of my newer works as well as certain ones, which may have been featured in galleries abroad but for various factors, may not have been displayed here. They are important in showcasing my creative mindset at certain instances in my career.
Q. What are your thoughts with regard to the art scene in Kolkata?
A. It is certainly not as much progressive as it is in other countries. By that I am referring to the attitude that comes into effect when considering the artist as a socially creative person whose efforts should be highlighted and respected. There is of course a dearth of people who genuinely love the arts as an art form with all-round viability. Yet the situation is improving and this is positive.
Q. What are your future projects?
A. I can’t exactly divulge all that right now. I paint everyday and I will go as I see things fit.
Shuvaprasanna is an eminent painter
