Panacea Biotec, one of the largest biotechnology companies in India recently launched the book “Prevent”-Diabetes & Complications in India: Perspective & Treatment Options. Present on the occasion were Dr Subhankar Chowdhury, Dr Anjan Lal Dutta and Dr Debashis Basu from Kolkata.
It is a book which attempts to address managing diabetes and complications from Indian perspective. In view of the fact that we are genetically more conducive to develop diabetes and complications, there are various factors which contribute to compounding the patients’ misery like-lack of awareness, late diagnosis, inadequate management and no concrete guidance to manage Indian diabetics.
The session focussed on various issues related to diabetes like diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, diabetes & kidney, diabetes and heart and diabetes and skin diseases. The acute complications of diabetes are hypoglycemia, obesity, amputation caused due to diabetes, heart failure and many more. The preventive methods were also discussed.
Nearly 51 million Indians are suffering from diabetes at present. Prevent is a step towards managing diabetes with the aim of proper diagnosis, preventive methods and management of the complications in Indian embodiment. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Subhankar Chowdhury, professor and head of endocrinology IPGME&R and SSKM Hospital, said “India has a dubious distinction of being home to highest number of diabetic and IHD patients.”
According to Dr Anjan Lal Dutta, professor of division of cardiology, Vivekananda Institutes of Medical Sciences and past president of Cardiological Society of India added, “Growing burden of CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) in diabetes increases the risk of highest mortality rate. Prevent is a way to check and guard against these complications.”
Taking note of the alarming rate at which prevalence and incidence of diabetes in India is increasing, an eminent panel from across India, comprising renowned diabetologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, neurologists and retinologists, under the chairmanship of Padmashree Dr Anoop Mishra(Fortis, New Delhi), endeavoured to put in evidence and practical experience to come up with this book. It is a must read for every individual who wants to control diabetes and prolong the sweetness of this gifted life.
